Hoy continuamos aprendiendo palabras con doble pronunciación en inglés en función de si las utilizamos en su faceta de nombres o en la de verbos

La semana pasada estuvimos viendo algunos casos de palabras con doble pronunciación en inglés. Vocablos que variaban su significado en función de si la sílaba acentuada era una u otra (lo podéis ver en este enlace). Hoy continuamos con algunos ejemplos más.

Upgrade

Verbo: upGRADE (/ʌpˈɡreɪd/). Aumentar la categoría de algo.

I’d booked a small car, but we had a lot of luggage, so we decided to upgrade to a bigger one.

Nombre: UPgrade (/ˈʌp.ɡreɪd/). Aumento de categoría.

They didn’t have the car we’d booked, so they gave us a free upgrade to a convertible car!

 

Downgrade

Verbo: downGRADE (/ˌdaʊnˈɡreɪd/). Bajar la categoría de algo.

The car we were going to rent was too big for our group, so we asked the car hire company to downgrade it for us.

Nombre: DOWNgrade (/ˈdaʊnɡreɪd/). Bajada de categoría.

The ratings downgrade from the debt-rating agencies put the company in a difficult situation.

 

Protest

Verbo: proTEST (/prəˈtɛst/). Prostestar, generalmente de forma pública.

Thousands of people went out to protest the Government’s policy on education.

Nombre: PROtest. Protesta, generalmente de forma pública.

The Government’s policy on education caused a huge protest.

 

Rebel

Verbo: reBEL (/rɪˈbɛl/). Rebelarse.

The people decided to rebel against the dictator.

Nombre: REbel (/ˈrɛbəl/) Rebelde

The lack of freedom in my country made me become a rebel.

 

Detail

Verbo: deTAIL (/dɪˈteɪl/). Detallar.

The book details what life was like in the Middle Ages.

Nombre: DEtail (/ˈdiːteɪl/). Detalle

The book gives many details about life in the Middle Ages.

 

Update

Verbo: upDATE (/ʌpˈdeɪt/). Actualizar.

We need to update our software.

Nombre: UPdate (/ˈʌpdeɪt/). Actualización.

Contrast

Verbo: conTRAST (/kənˈtrɑːst/). Contrastar con.

Permit

Verbo: perMIT (/pəˈmɪt/). Permitir.

The American Government didn’t permit the sale of alcohol in the 1920’s.

In order to find a job in our country, you need a work permit.

 

Upset

Verbo: upSET (/ʌpˈsɛt/). Disgustar.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.

Nombre: UPset (/ˈʌpsɛt/). Disgusto. En deportes, un resultado sorprendente en el que gana el equipo que no era favorito.
